Course description:

The purpose of this course is to educate the optometrist on their role in managing systemic disease in the geriatric population. The course will describe the demographics of the older population; discuss the pathophysiologic principles of common medical problems that are prevalent in this population; discuss treatment matters and medical considerations; discuss strategies for managing older patients; all as related to optometric care.

Course objectives:

  • List demographics the older population
  • Describe chronic diseases and top causes of death in the older population
  • Outline medical considerations specific for the older population
  • Describe strategies an optometrist can utilize in care of the older population
